True story. The Vanilla Fudge flew out to the Fillmore West for a gig. When they arrived at the venue they saw Iron Butterfly during soundcheck. The Butterfly were polishing a new song they planned to premiere later that night - which the Fudge quietly laughed off as being an incompetent rip off of Pink Floyd's "Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun." About that time, Bill Graham came along to tell them that, instead of closing the show, they'd be opening for Iron Butterfly since In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida just went Top 10. The Fudge were furious! Bad enough just getting dicked around, but... opening for Iron Butterfly was an insult that just would not stand. They threatened to walk, but Graham quickly reminded the guys he had a signed contract... and their return flight tickets. So, the Fudge skipped soundcheck altogether and even thought about skipping the gig entirely, when instead they showed up on time, at the very last minute, to take the stage. Foregoing their usual set, Vanilla Fudge played a one song show. Their own, improvised version of 'Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun,' sounding amazingly like Iron Butterfly's soundcheck. Especially so, since the Fudge were actually imitating Iron Butterfly throughout the set, down to the simplistic riffs, tortuous droning and shiny Nehru jackets. During the show, the members of Butterfly began collecting in the wings and vile stares were silently exchanged between members of both bands. But the Fudge did not let up... not until their contracted 40 minute performance time (found in the "opener's" fine print) had expired. Afterwards, a fight broke out backstage between Doug Ingle and Carmine Appice. The Fudge picked up their check and caught the redeye back to NY. This 40 minute track is the music they played that night. Recorded live. Get stoned & comfy. No refunds.

I don't even care whether I'm gonna like this. I've just gotta hear it!
ReplyDeleteHey thanks IF,
ReplyDeleteOur first comment.
Actually we thought about going with the Lemmy-led Hawkwind boot stomping someone from Genesis story... but thought the Fudge was more believable.
Thanks.
Hey, the Infinte Fool is gonna listen. Make sure you've got a defibrillator nearby. Thanks for listening. MD
ReplyDeleteThe Lemmy story never got off the ground. Kenny just wanted to act out his obsession to bootstomp Genesis (the Phil Collins version, unless I'm mistaken). Lonnie
ReplyDeleteJust because Shelly slept through it doesn't mean the Infinite Fool will. He KNOWS how dull Vanilla Fudge imitating Iron Butterfly at the Fillmore could actually be. He's mentally prepared for the endurance. Shelly's a lightweight. (Does she know about Comments yet?)
ReplyDeleteyep!
ReplyDeleteShe will now. MD
ReplyDeletejeez...
ReplyDeleteI say the Infinite Fool comes back in 40 odd minutes (depending on how long it knocks him out) and cusses somebody out. Lonnie
ReplyDeleteTime him. We'll SEE how long it knocks people out.
ReplyDeleteHey is The Infinite Fool still alive. Our track didn't kill him did it? Has anyone heard from him?
ReplyDeleteThis is why no one leaves comments. One minute everyone's all excited, the next minute you think the guy's dead. This is why we don't take you anywhere.
ReplyDeleteI'm fine guys. Thanks for caring. The track is almost as much fun as the explanation for the track, btw. No cussing here (this time...)
ReplyDeleteTHE FOOL LIVES! Apparently he was only stunned for about 36 hours and was able to get to a phone for help. The best part? He didn't send us an invoice for the 40 minutes of his life we wasted for him.
ReplyDeleteLET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this one &thanks to Infinite Fool.
From Brasil.FD
Thanks fd,
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks to The Infinite Fool, too.
The Fool DID live to tell the tale. Though... he was seriously dazed. You can tell because he's written about us on his blog, which means he's still a little woozy.

Thanks a million.

Hi there. Many thanks for linking me.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I can contribute some guitar/bass playing or remixing for you, as well? Here is a taste of my efforts:

Hi nada,
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking us, first. You've got a cool blog over at Music For Dummies. We really appreciate it.
We'd love it if you joined in. No need to audition (though we'll listen anyway, thanks for the sample). We're always up for any contribution and look forward to hearing whatever you can send our way.
All The Best,
WLFC
Hey NADA,
ReplyDeleteCool Bossa and Goblins. Love to hear you join in.
Lonnie
Yeah nada... looking forward to hearing something. Don't be surprised if it winds up in a different tune altogether. That's been known to happen. MD
ReplyDeleteHey... we're big in Brazil! Thanks fd. MD
ReplyDeleteWhy are you anonymous?
ReplyDeleteI forgot the password. Unless you guys changed it. Is that the deal? MD
ReplyDeleteWRITE IT DOWN!
ReplyDeleteJust listened to NADA's track. Cool. Get him on board. Thanks NADA. - Rudy
ReplyDeleteWhile searching all things King Crimson, I stumbled upon a blog that had a link to this. Being a Floyd fan, I had to have a listen and I'm glad I did.
ReplyDeleteVery nicely done. Didn't even feel like 40 min!
I'm now going to have to listen to the rest, damn it! Do you guys tour?
Thanks Smitty,
ReplyDeleteNo... no touring. We just hang in our communal abode, get high and jam. The thought of trying to take it on the road just seems like too much work. We'd rather relax and go down whatever musical (or non-musical) avenue the noise takes us. Thanks for coming by.
WLFC
And MEGA thanks for the plug on your blog.
ReplyDeleteWLFC
Wow, what big fun that was. BTW, I had http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HmJQyS8QVw opened in another tab and it went well along the pink floyd thing :-))
ReplyDeleteNice one,
regards

Hi Claudio,
ReplyDeleteThanks for listening. "Set The Controls..." also plays perfectly along with "The Wizard Of Oz," (start it when Dorothy clicks her shoes) and, especially, with "Weekend At Bernies" (start it the 37th time Andrew McCarthy widens his eyes - about 6 minutes in). All the best.
Dear WLFC,
ReplyDeleteI featured your "...Heart Of The Sun..." on RFW inside Transmission 7708 and added a link as well(will be up on Thrsday).
Hats off to your collective for a great journey!

Thanks a million Dave. We listened and were blown away by the cool music (before ours) and the nice things you had to say about WLFC (in "Transmission 7708"). Now were raiding your other Transmissions (http://radiofreewohlman.blogspot.com/) for more psychedelic music ramblings (digging the synth one now). Great show and a great listen, thanks for including us.
ReplyDeleteWLFC
Stumbled upon you by accident & was pleasantly surprised!
ReplyDeleteI am also having a problem with this one file.
I have tried Megaupload & divShare.... Tried unzipping & using WinRar with no luck.
I like the Hawkwind idea... you might want to try it.
Thanks for your music to date.
Hipster,
ReplyDeleteThere should not be a problem "unzipping" the divShare file because no unzipping is required. It's just the MP3 file by itself.
With that thought in mind, we've now re-upped the MP3 file to Sharebee, so it doesn't have to be unzipped there either. It's just the naked MP3 file. Just click the song title link to access.
As for Hawkwind, we sorta took a stab at some faux Hawkwind on #28 Transmissions Vol. 1.
Thanks for listening
WLFC
this is really cool stuff - great title!! and idea - recorded well - keep the hits-a-coming
ReplyDeleteBeing a late-comer to Late For Class, I've been madly downloading everything (I have 9 more[21-29] yet to dl) & listening to it as fast as I can, making my own mix-tapes of various tracks I think go together for me. I decided to sleep out in the backyard in my tent last night. I put this one on as I settled in to enjoy some homegrown Golden Pineapple x Hashplant 13. What a epicurean delight of musick & muggles.
ReplyDelete(The title is even longer than Floyd's "Several Species of Small Fury Animals Gathered Together in a Cave & Grooving with a Pict". Good job.)
There's no higher praise, indeed. Thanks No, for getting into the spirit(s) of things... and for the great posts over at Nothin' Sez Somethin'.
ReplyDeleteWLFC
After hearing this I'll just have to download more of your sounds. Thanks for making an old hippy happy.
ReplyDeletewhat a cool post title !!
ReplyDeleteToo long for the header, though.
ReplyDeleteand .. oh it has NOTHING to do with this particular post.. but i just heard the beatles 'LOVE' what a waste of money!. it's just another 'mashup'.. and compared to yours.. its Sooo substandard..

ReplyDeleteDoc
Help!!! it would seem that the only dl link left working is MU and i'm not sure what kind of file it is. i wonder if you could re-up this one (#6), as i've started at #1 this morning and haven't looked back. so far it's been really great. i intend to make it to #51, if the gods are with me.
ReplyDeleteplease re-up!!!
thanks,
jeremiah
Sadly, our older stuff sometimes gets ignored. So you may run into this again on your quest to 51. But, the MU file is fine (don't know what you mean by 'what kind of file it is.') If you would, give it a shot and see. If you run into ANY problems, we won't leave you hanging. We just re-upped EVERYTHING we have only a few months ago, and will do it again if needed. Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteO.K., i tried it again using MU. it says that it is an "application/octet stream" (whatever that is).
ReplyDeletei hope this gets resolved. it's like having a puzzle with a piece missing.
thanks,
jeremiah
never heard or saw that before. In that case... we're uploading it now. Should take about 10 minutes.
ReplyDeletethank you. wonderful. i like you even more now.
ReplyDeletejeremiah
OK. New link up and running. Just click the title in the post. Thanks for the note. Let us know about any others you run into. Thanks again.
ReplyDeletesorry i'm being such a thorn in your side (or ice pick in your skull), but this time when i downloaded the file, i couldn't open it. winrar said (among other things) "the file name or extension is too long", "total path and file name length must not exceed 260 characters".
ReplyDeletethis may be a lost cause. am i doomed to failure?
jeremiah
Not at all. Actually, we've run into that before and, before uploading it this time, shortened the name of the file. But... NOT the mp3 itself. So, we'll reup it, all shortened, and see how it works. We appreciate the details so we can fix them for others. Give us another 10.
ReplyDeleteYES!!! Got It!!!! It was absolutely worth the wait.
ReplyDeleteThanks Again. WOW!
jeremiah
Cool, thanks for caring enough to keep trying. We've got some new stuff to post at the beginning of the year. Our Singles Box.
ReplyDeletePink Floyd meets Klaus Schulze at the Ash Ra Tempel...
ReplyDelete...Masaki Batoh appears like A Ghost From The Darkened Sea...
...and then the voyage continues on to the Heart of the Sun.

You're spending way too much time around here Mick. Thanks for the comments.
